Stairs plays with the idea of movement without progress — that feeling of being suspended between up and down, effort and indulgence. A classical spiral staircase becomes a kind of loop or trap, elegant and endless, while the figure sits casually within it, caught mid-gesture.

There’s humour in it, but also something slightly uncomfortable. The image feels balanced and off-kilter at the same time, like a pause taken in the middle of momentum. I like that tension — the sense that this could be pleasure, escape, or avoidance, depending on how long you look.

As with much of my collage work, Stairs is about reframing familiar imagery so it slips into something stranger, quieter, and more ambiguous.
